Quick Read: Does Fat Weigh More Than Muscle?

February 21, 2018

Often when people start their healthier lifestyles or weight loss journeys; they jump on the scales and wonder what is going on. They find that their weight remains the same or initially goes down and then up. You may have been told that this is because muscle weighs more than fat. This is a myth.

Muscle is denser than Fat

A pound of fat and a pound of muscle weigh the same. Fat actually takes up more room than muscle so when you stick to your workout schedule; you should begin to look leaner.

It is more advantageous to have more muscle than fat; as muscle helps to burn fat (boosts your metabolism). However, too little fat can lead to unhealthy consequences as fat does play an important role in the body too (especially for women).

Weighing yourself is not necessarily helpful as the numbers on the scale can fluctuate and they never truly stay constant. If you really want to how much improvement your regimen has made, you can use a measuring tape and check how many inches you have lost.

Or not even that – check your improvement by an MOT from your doctor, your success in achieving your fitness goals or by how great you feel! Your improvement in your general well being is a much better measurement of success.
